Why Make This Movie?

This project came about when my big sister, a consecrated virgin, told me that as a father I must teach my daughters the virtues of purity, modesty and chastity. Otherwise, she said, given our post-Christian culture (and some specific bad influences in their life) they will be devoured by a corrupt worldview.

At that time, like many parents I had a camcorder for birthdays, family vacations, first steps, sporting events, school concerts etc. I took footage from the camcorder and edited it together with photos, music and narration to make family videos for Christmas. The kids loved seeing each other on TV!  They would gleefully watch these videos over and over.

What better way to teach chastity than to have them act in a real movie where the protagonists exemplify the virtue? Besides showing how chastity is actually lived out in practice, wouldn’t it also reinforce a positive self-identity in their minds?  After all, they would have an indelible record showing themselves acting as heroes of virtue.  They can elevate every relationship they will ever have, framing it in terms of human dignity, simply by sharing the DVD.  And they can use it to evangelize.  And the process of making a movie together should be a fun experience that brings our family closer together.

These aspirations seem to me to be much more than my own idea.  It seems I’ve been prepared to do this work my whole life.  As I wrote the movie, I prayed for inspiration.  I believe those prayers have been answered many times in many amazing ways.  As we film the movie, many seemingly insurmountable roadblocks have been overcome already, not through our own ingenuity, but through Providence.  I take this all as a confirmation of the Lord’s call to make the movie happen.

My prayer is that we persevere through to completion, and that the movie pleases the Lord and blesses all who help make it and all who watch it.

We are certainly not making this movie for fame or fortune!  We discerned early on that our equipment should be DVD quality but not theater quality.  So the movie will never be released in theaters.  We will never be recognized by any but those who help us make the movie. That's a good thing as far as we're concerned.

Furthermore, once the movie is finished, we will offer it free to charitable organizations to sell for their fund-raising.  If no organization wants it, we will make the DVD available from Amazon.com for cheap.  Amazon can reproduce DVDs and ship them worldwide at no cost to us.  We’re making this movie because we believe we’re on a mission from God.  We don’t want any profit.
